Build Focus outside of combat in LEGO Batman Legacy of the Dark Knight with the Focused Maneuvers skill and a specific boost glide loop

In LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, filling your Focus Bar is essential for using special moves like Takedowns. While Focus is built primarily during combat, there's a way to do so by boosting into a glide while traversing Gotham City.

If you are doing so and Focus isn't building, it's because this technique isn't available from the beginning of the game. It has to be unlocked first.

Unlock the Focused Maneuvers Skill First

You cannot build Focus while navigating Gotham City until you unlock the Focused Maneuvers skill on the Exploration branch of the shared skill tree.

Unlike gadget upgrades found at the Batcave Workbenches, most skill nodes in the skill tree are locked behind story progression. The section of the Exploration Skill Tree containing this node only becomes available after you progress into Chapter 3.

Once the skill tree expands, the Focused Maneuvers skill can be unlocked by spending 1 Skill Brick.

How to Execute the Focus Glide Loop

Once you have purchased the Focused Maneuvers skill, you can use the following loop to build Focus quickly outside of combat.

  1. While exploring Gotham City, press LB / L1 / L button to target a ledge and launch your Grappling Hook.
  2. Before your character actually reaches the ledge or anchor point you have grappled onto, press the X / A / B button.
  3. Your character will launch past the ledge, jump into the air, and transition into a glide.
  4. Doing so with the Focused Maneuvers skill unlocked grants you roughly one quarter of a full Focus Bar.

As you can repeatedly execute this grapple-cancel loop back-to-back, you can max out your Focus bar quickly without ever touching the ground, allowing you to use Takedowns or powerful techniques like Focus Bat Swarm as soon as combat starts, letting you defeat the strongest enemies before they can even react.
