How to Reduce Random Encounters Significantly in Octopath Traveler 0 – Evasive Maneuvers Skill Location Guide

Francesco De Meo
In the game 'Octopath Traveler 0,' the character Astrid is selecting the 'Attack' command in a turn-based battle against enemies named Salamandra and Shadow Guardian.
Here's how to significantly reduce Octopath Traveler 0's encounter rate for a more enjoyable experience

Being modeled after traditional Japanese role-playing games, Octopath Traveler 0 features random enemy encounters in fields and dungeons, forcing you to fight against enemies rather often.

Thankfully, there is a way to reduce enemy encounters significantly and have a much better time with the game: equipping the Evasive Maneuvers skill.

How to Unlock the Evasive Maneuvers Skill

The Evasive Maneuvers Mastery is found inside a treasure chest in the Cavern of Mists (Highlands Region, Level 33). The chest is located to the left of the main entrance in the very first area.

However, the chest is guarded by the Menacing Woolly Spider Elite Enemy. While challenging, you can defeat this boss as early as Level 25 by consistently debuffing its Physical Attack and buffing your party’s Physical Defense.

To equip the skill once unlocked:

  1. Open the Main Menu (Triangle / Y / X button).
  2. Navigate to the Skills tab and select Equip Skills.
  3. Assign Evasive Maneuvers to any open Support Skill slot. (Note: Slots are unlocked using JP).

What does Evasive Maneuvers Do?

Evasive Maneuvers is a returning Support Skill that reduces the rate of random encounters by 50%. In a game like Octopath Traveler 0, where high encounter rates can impact the pacing of a 100-hour playthrough, this skill is essential for map exploration and "sequence breaking" into high-level areas to grab treasure.

How Effective is the Evasive Maneuvers Skill?

While the official description states a 50% reduction, our testing shows that in practical terms, it often eliminates encounters on short to medium transitions. We tested this by running (which normally triggers a higher encounter rate) across two different zones:

Location / RouteMovementWithout Evasive ManeuversWth Evasive Maneuvers
Wishvale Trail (North) to West Emberglow WildsRunning2 Encounters0 Encounters
Cragspear Pass (East) to South Cragspear PassRunning1 Encounter0 Encounters

Even if the math is a 50% reduction, the "step-count" buffer it provides is enough to cross many medium map segments without a single fight, drastically improving the game's pacing.
