Alone in the Dark

The new reboot of Alone in the Dark is here, but the game still has a lot of old-school survival horror flavor, which means a lot of puzzles, secrets, and other mysteries to unravel. But don’t worry, we here at Wccftech are here to guide you past the tricky bits.

Most of the puzzles in Alone in the Dark take place in the central Derceto Manor hub, but a few also present themselves when exploring other realms. One of the simplest yet most perplexing takes place in Chapter 3 when exploring the Pregzt Shipping Company. At one point, you’ll need to get a key item out of a safe, with only a single rather vague clue to guide you. Finding the combination can be a headscratcher, but don’t worry, we’ve got the answer for you…

Note: As with most puzzles in Alone in the Dark, the solution is the same regardless of whether you’re playing as Edward or Emily.

You’ll find the office on the second floor of the Pregzt Shipping Company warehouse. This is where the you’ll find the safe (as well as the very handy Tommy gun).

You’ll also find the above note. The key passage is…

What is left

Later is right

And hell is back again

So what’s it mean? Well, it's clear you need to turn the dial on the safe left, right, then left again. But what about the numbers? The hint is in the number of letters in the key words “what” (4) and “later” (5). Yeah, kind of a goofy solution, but that's what it is.

So, to open the safe, turn the dial Left to 4, all the way around the dial to the Right to 5, then Left again one notch to 4 again. The safe should open!

And there you go, you’ve got your next clue and are now free to continue on with this section of the game, including exploring the Sunken Temple.

Alone in the Dark is available now on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PS5. You can check out all of Wccftech’s Alone in the Dark guides here.
