Halo Infinite downgrade scaled back

Yesterday, several known Halo Infinite leakers provided substantial information (collected on a ResetEra thread) on the upcoming content that 343 Industries will add to the game over the next year or so.

Highlights include 28 maps in development, new narrative events, and AI NPCs like Brutes, Elites, and Grunts being tested in Forge. New weapons and vehicles are also in the making, as is the long-anticipated cooperative PvE Firefight mode.

With regards to Season 3 'Echoes Within', which is due to launch in Halo Infinite early next month, the leaks say the game will be updated with three to five new maps, a new weapon, and the Infection game mode. According to the leaks, Season 3's narrative will be based around the AI construct Iratus.

Huge layoffs recently hit 343 Industries among the many cuts made by Microsoft. There were even rumors pointing out that the future of the Halo franchise would be developed outside of the Redmond-based studio, but these rumors were since shut down by Microsoft. Still, reports indicate that the studio is being restructured so much that it's basically as if it was starting from scratch. 343 Industries is also considering whether to drop Slipspace Engine, the technology made specifically for Halo Infinite, in favor of the Unreal Engine. For example, the new game mode in development at Certain Affinity will be powered by Epic's technology.

Halo Infinite as is certainly wasn't the success Microsoft was hoping for, although it reviewed fairly well. The game received an 8 out of 10 score in Wccftech's review penned by Chris Wray.

Halo Infinite is, in my opinion, the best game of the series. While still faltering in the narrative, character development, and exposition, it improves earlier titles. Combat is entertaining and engaging, with improvements made across the board, but mention must go to new abilities like the grappling hook. The move to an open world helps the game stand apart, with added freedom to take the fight to your enemies and a vast arsenal of weapons and vehicles to bring into battle. While it slips up on a few occasions, from somebody who has never been part of the Halo fan club, this has given me a glimpse of what could be great things to come.
