Prior to the official announcement of the expansion for Ragnarok, there were several rumors about an upcoming expansion. Interestingly, Game Director Eric Williams previously said that fans shouldn't count on DLC.

Announced during last week's Game Awards 2023 event, God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla is an epilogue to the events of Ragnarok, seeing Kratos embark on a personal journey to overcome trials within himself and face echoes of the past. The expansion is a roguelike DLC, which, according to its game director, will feature an endgame challenge that none of the expansions dev team has managed to beat. "There is an endgame challenge in #GodOfWarRagnarokValhalla that no one on the dev team has completed on the hardest difficulty 'Show Me Mastery'", the Game Director wrote on X earlier today. "I am so, so curious to see how quickly players will humble us.. as they often do... but maybe this time we've beaten them?"

As also revealed by the Game Director, players won't be able to switch between difficulty modes during a run. "You are free to do so before you start a new attempt, but must commit once you walk through the starting doors until you fail or succeed. You are encouraged to change difficulties (incl Show Me Mastery) between attempts to find the right one for you!".

The God of War: Ragnarok Valhall DLC releases later today for free on both PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. The expansion launches at 9AM PT/ 12PM ET/ 5PM GMT.
