The latest global smartphone chipset market share figures for the third quarter of 2024 have been shared by research firm Canalys, showing various vendors performing well in certain areas while being overtaken by their competitors in others. When it comes to the total number of chipset shipments for this particular quarter, MediaTek had no close rival by a long shot, but garnering the most number does not necessarily mean generating the most revenue, as that accolade now belongs to Apple. However, when it comes to meteoric growth, no company performed as well as Huawei’s HiSilicon division. Let us take a closer look at these numbers and talk in more detail.
Huawei stood tall over its competitors with its 211 percent growth compared to the same period last year; MediaTek shipped 119 million chipsets, but figure is lower compared to Q3 2023
Despite the Dimensity 9400 launching in the fourth quarter this year, MediaTek enjoyed massive success during Q3 2024, when it was estimated to have shipped 119 million chipsets, attaining a $26 billion revenue for the period. However, both its shipment tally and revenue were down compared to the same quarter last year, with Qualcomm performing better than its rival while recording fewer shipments, bringing in $38 billion in sales against 76 million units. It is likely that MediaTek has its silicon powering the most affordable of smartphones, and it might be sacrificing its margins to receive additional orders from clients.

As for Apple, it might not have come close to the number of shipments compared to MediaTek and Qualcomm, with just 54 million estimated units, but it obtained the highest revenue for any other vendor out there, with this figure being 11 percent higher compared to the same period last year. As most readers know, Apple does not sell its chipsets to other clients and exclusively uses its technology in iPhones. With every iPhone sold, Apple stands to make more, which is why it has secured first place in this particular category. Coming to Huawei, being limited to its home turf has not subdued its success, as the statistics show a whopping 211 percent ‘year over year’ growth.

Then again, it is relatively easy to conclude that Huawei witnessed such a massive success in this quarter when it actually only shipped eight million chipsets under the HiSilicon brand, with total revenue reaching $7 billion. Compared to the rest of the vendors, the latest figure is a drop in the bucket, but you also have to remember that other companies were not hammered by trade sanctions that would severely limit their options. With its back against the wall, Huawei demonstrated immense perseverance and managed to crawl out of the abyss. If you want to check out each vendor’s progress for this quarter, you can see the charts above, which are a bit blurry, but the information is still legible.
