Back at The Game Awards 2024, legendary video game maker Fumito Ueda, who you'd recognize as the person behind games like Shadow of the Colossus, The Last Guardian and Ico, revealed his first new game in years as an untitled game known as Project Robot. Today, during Summer Game Fest 2026, Ueda and his team at genDesign revealed the game's official title, Gen ATLAS, and showed off some gameplay.
The reveal of Gen Atlas was part of a jam-packed opening for Geoff Keighley's show this year, which also led with two new games from Studio MDHR, the reveal of Resident Evil: Code Veronica Remake, and the release date for Stranger Than Heaven.
It'll come to PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, though the one wrinkle is that it'll arrive first on Epic Games Store, on account of it being published by Epic Games. If you want to grab it on Steam, you'll have to wait until the exclusivity period is over.
While the trailer didn't feature a release date, it did set the tone and atmosphere for the game, and the game's official description goes a step further. "Without knowing why, you awaken on an abandoned planet," it reads. "Before you lies a vast, silent world. Colossal structures stretch over endless plains, deserted facilities, and an ever-changing sea. The remnants of some grand design litter the planet’s surface. As you journey deeper into this strange world, a colossal robot awaits. Its overwhelming power opens paths to places once beyond reach, transforming your conception of the world. Across an endless expanse of time, the remnants of those forgotten constructs begin to move once more…gen ATLAS—a single-player, open-world action-adventure game."
From such a historic creator, whatever Gen ATLAS ends up playing like, it'll likely be something worth checking out. We know from the trailer that we'll get plenty of third-person action, and some incredibly epic battles between these massive robots.
Of course, we'll have to wait until we play it to truly know the heart of the game's story, which, if Ueda's previous work is any indication, will be a deeply emotional story. "The team and I are grateful to all the fans who’ve been eager to learn more about our game," Ueda said in a statement on the game's reveal. "Their passion and enthusiasm has always motivated and inspired us. We hope to share an experience that inspires moments of quiet wonder and discovery."
