Gears 5’s Updated Escalation Versus Mode Showcased by Developers

Gears 5, now set to release on September 10th for PC and Xbox One, is beginning to showcase itself as we get closer to the release date. The Coalition demonstrated the brand new Escape PvE mode at E3 2019 where three players will have to plant a bomb at the heart of a Swarm Hive before escaping. Interestingly, a new Map Builder tool is going to allow players to create and share Escape maps.

Yesterday, though, during the Episode 4 of ELEAGUE Gears Summer Series: The Bonds And Betrayals of Brotherhood, the developers of Gears 5 provided the first look at one of the Versus PvP modes that will be in the game, Escalation.

It's coming back from Gears of War 4, but there are quite a few tweaks.

Escalation is the pinnacle objective-based mode in Gears 5 that brings out the best in individual play, teamwork and strategizing.

The basic principle of Escalation is simple. Two teams of five players battle to control three rings on the map – one close to your spawn, one in the middle and one close to your opponent’s spawn.

Every ring your team holds earns you one point a second towards the round-winning goal of 250 (up from 210 in Gears of War 4). If you hold 3 Rings at once, you’ll win an instant Domination Victory. The first team to win seven rounds wins.

After every round, new weapons are placed on the battlefield and the player respawn times change in length.

While the basics of Escalation remain mostly unchanged from Gears 4 to Gears 5, the layers on top have changed entirely to create the deepest game mode ever seen in Gears.

The next step for Gears 5 is the Versus tech test, due on July 19th for those who have pre-ordered the game or have an active Xbox Game Pass subscription. The test will include a brand new Versus PvP mode called Arcade.
