Samsung is reportedly set on launching its first device featuring a 3nm chip, and it is not the first product that comes to mind. Last month, speculation erupted that Galaxy Watch 7 would be the inaugural point for the 3nm process node. According to a recent news report from the Korean Economic Daily, the rumors were backed up further and even included specific details such as the chipset's name.
The first 3nm chip to allegedly be launched for the Galaxy Watch 7 could take users by surprise
Samsung's intention to manufacture the 3nm chips next year is not a private affair. The company stated its plan to introduce chips based on the 2nm process in 2025 and 1.4nm chips in 2027. The in-house Exynos 2400 chip for the Galaxy S24 would not be created using these processes. Instead, the company will opt to base it on a 4nm process. However, the next-gen Exynos 2500 will be manufactured on a 3nm architecture for better performance.
The Galaxy Watch 7 is the first product to be powered by a 3nm chip, the Exynos W1000. The company reportedly plans to start producing the chip in the second half of the year. Contrary to previous suggestions, Samsung is calling the 3nm SoC the Exynos W1000 instead of Exynos W940, which is expected, as the company named the Galaxy Watch 6's processor W930.
The report further notified that Samsung would be using its second-generation 3nm process node, which is by far the most advanced technology in the semiconductor industry, as of yet. TSMC is the only other manufacturer producing chips using the same process, which has helped Apple stay ahead in the race.
The Exynos W1000 is expected to boost the wearable's performance by 20% and deliver major improvements in power efficiency. Additionally, compared to the Watch 6, the Watch 7 would have double the storage space, up to 32GB. The wearable would be equipped with enhanced AI features, bigger batteries, and advanced capabilities for Samsung Health.
We are also keen on the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and the Galaxy Z Flip 6 while awaiting the release of the long-due Galaxy Ring. There are three variants of the Galaxy Watch 7 expected in total, including an unknown variant. Whether Samsung will incorporate the new 3nm chip processor for all three models or reserve it for the Pro variant remains unclear.
We assume the advanced processor will be limited to the Pro variant for now. Irrespective of the model it will extend the processor to, the advanced AP would have the Galaxy Watch 7 competing against the Apple Watch Series 9 and Series 10, which will be released later this year.
