Analysts expect Apple's first foldable iPhone to bring in a sales wave for this particular category like never before

The foldable iPhone could be one of Apple’s biggest launches, according to the latest estimates, with the company reportedly gearing up to announce the flagship in September next year, possibly alongside the iPhone 18 series. The foldable smartphone form factor has been around for several years now, and even after countless iterations, these devices cannot be added to the same conversation as those regular-shaped handsets. However, according to the latest details, Apple is expected to change the entire global market landscape while capitalizing on a $65 billion opportunity.

Despite its high starting price, analysts predict that Apple’s foldable iPhone shipments could reach 45 million units in 2028

An investors’ research note from JPMorgan that was spotted by MacRumors mentions the arrival of the foldable iPhone in the third quarter of 2026. The device is reported to be sporting a book-style form factor with an inward folding design, flaunting a 7.8-inch primary display and a 5.5-inch cover panel. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has previously predicted that the foldable iPhone could cost customers between $2,000 and $2,500. However, JPMorgan believes that the device will be sold for $1,999 and will generate sales in the low-teens millions in 2027.

While the foldable iPhone will be off to a sluggish start, the investment bank’s analysts state that shipments are estimated to reach 45 million by 2028, with Apple influencing the market and creating a $65 billion opportunity in the process. Unlike other foldables, the Cupertino firm’s engineers reportedly want to deliver a product that is unlike what customers have seen or used, hinting that the device will ship with a crease-free display, a slimmer chassis and a titanium frame to reduce weight while improving durability.

Apple is also said to employ metal plates using laser drilling to minimize the crease effect, which is a process that is expected to increase production cost, with the foldable iPhone’s ‘Bill of Materials’ total said to be $759, explaining the ridiculously high retail price estimations that we have stumbled upon on several occasions. The preliminary specifications of the device have been mentioned in an earlier report, so make sure that you go through them to be well-informed about the foldable iPhone slated to launch next year.
