First premium MediaTek smartphone to launch in the United States

MediaTek has been largely unknown in the U.S. market, as it is a region dominated by Qualcomm when talking about the Android smartphone space. Even when companies like Samsung or Motorola proceed to launch more affordable options, rarely do we see them flaunting a MediaTek chipset. However, there will be a shift in how the market operates in the coming future, as the chipset maker announced that a premium handset will enter this region, likely with a powerful SoC, hinting that Qualcomm is about to experience some severe competition.

Looking at current chipset availability from MediaTek, either the Dimensity 9300 or the Dimensity 9300 Plus would be found in this unnamed premium smartphone

The announcement was made by MediaTek when an X user @nirave spotted a slide mentioning that a premium smartphone featuring the Taiwanese’s chipset would arrive in the U.S. A ton of data was shared during the company’s Analyst Day, along with the possibility that Qualcomm’s and Apple’s future market share could be threatened. However, as much as everyone loves seeing competition, the slides did not reveal which manufacturer would unveil that specific model with the MediaTek chipset.

Additionally, no information was provided on which silicon we will see in the future, but given that it is a high-end smartphone, we should see two options materialize. That unnamed handset would either feature the Dimensity 9300 or the upcoming Dimensity 9300 Plus, which is said to be unveiled on May 7. Then again, with the Dimensity 9400 launching in a few months, MediaTek may showcase its first 3nm chipset, taking on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 in the process.

An earlier rumor claimed that the Dimensity 9400 has a higher Instruction Per Cycle (IPC) than Apple’s A17 Pro, suggesting that we are in for a treat as far as performance is the primary talking point. MediaTek previously claimed that its flagship chipset revenue is up by 50 percent compared to 2023, probably thanks to the popularity of the Dimensity 9300. Since the U.S. is the biggest smartphone SoC market by revenue, it would explain why MediaTek is focused on entering this region with a convincing launch.
