Final Fantasy VII Revelation Won’t Just Wrap The Trilogy, As The Highwind Promises To Redefine Series’ Scale

A character from Final Fantasy VII Remake and her companions appear in a dimly lit underground setting.

The Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy has been in the works for a very long time, and will finally conclude in only ten years with Final Fantasy VII Revelation (formerly known as Final Fantasy VII Remake part 3). While no new information has been provided by Naoki Hamaguchi in a fresh interview with ComicBook focused on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S versions of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the trilogy director revealed the guiding philosophy behind the development of all three games that will lead to its conclusion, featuring the full cast finally playable and maybe even a new party member, being the culmination of the entire series.

"Across the entire remake project, the guiding philosophy has been to progressively expand the scale of the gameplay experience with each entry, rather than repeat the same experience," Hamaguchi-san said. "Final Fantasy VII Remake established an experience centered on engaging deeply with story and characters, while Rebirth moved toward an even more expansive experience that includes the world map. This series isn’t about rehashing the same gameplay just because it’s a remake."

"I consider this project where we’ve pushed ourselves to ask, 'How much further can we expand the experience?' with each new entry. For the third installment, we’re not thinking about simply wrapping up everything we’ve built until this point," the Final Fantasy VII Revelation director said. "Rather, we’re focused on how the full scale of the series we’ve been aiming for could ultimately be realized as a complete experience. That way of thinking is deeply reflected in our current development process. I think you could also look forward to the Highwind, which I know many people are curious about [Laughter]."

With so many teases regarding the game's scope and the Highwind airship gameplay, fans are more anxious than ever to see the game in action for the first time. Unfortunately, it is not yet known when this will happen (though it is rumored its multiplatform reveal will happen on June 5)

"I’m unable to share concrete details at this time. What I can say is that development itself is proceeding on time and on schedule. We believe it’ll become a title we can deliver with confidence as the culmination of the trilogy. We know many fans are eagerly waiting, and preparations toward the announcement are steadily underway. Please look forward to it just a little longer," Hamaguchi-san concluded.

With the 30th anniversary of the original Final Fantasy VII coming up on January 31, 2027, there's a very high chance the release of Final Fantasy VII Revelation on PC and consoles simultaneously will coincide with it in some form, potentially followed at some point by a Dirge of Cerberus remake or remaster. And if this is indeed the case, as the publisher's relatively light release schedule for this year and early next year seems to suggest, we will likely get a glimpse of the conclusion of Cloud's journey during the upcoming Summer showcases of the "not-E3" season.
