Chris Avellone, senior designer on Fallout: New Vegas, says Bethesda may lack the full source code needed to remaster the beloved RPG.

Fallout: New Vegas Senior Designer and Writer Chris Avellone talked extensively about the Fallout franchise in a recent interview with YouTuber TKs-Mantis. Avellone (who also worked as a designer on Fallout 2 and on the canceled Van Buren project) claimed that, to his knowledge, Obsidian never provided the full source code of Fallout: New Vegas to Bethesda. Furthermore, as far as he knows, they don't have the knowledge to reassemble it, which constitutes a major problem for the rumored remaster.

I don't think Bethesda has the engineering know-how to make a remaster of Fallout: New Vegas at all. And the reason I say that is, the very last milestone for New Vegas was to deliver all the source code and the ability to make the build. And Bethesda were like, "We'll pay you $10,000 for that milestone."

For reasons unknown to me, though I have my suspicions, Feargus decided not to collect on that milestone and didn't hit it. Which is not a crazy decision if you think about it, given that the New Vegas experience may have cheated him out of X amount of money. In which case, cutting off the revenue stream from that product for a time would be a possibility.

I'm not saying Bethesda doesn't have the source code for New Vegas. They could have aspects and portions of it, but everyone I've spoken to after that period said they had no idea how to reassemble it. And I'm like, that's kind of a problem if you want to do anything with it.

Rumors of a Fallout: New Vegas remaster were sparked in November 2025 by Windows Central's Jez Corden, who shared that such a project was in the works alongside the previously rumored Fallout 3 remaster (which should still launch first). Then, last month, port and remaster factory Iron Galaxy appeared to be teasing a new project using the iconic "Please Stand By" picture from the game, only to clarify the following day that they were not, in fact, referring to something related to New Vegas.

Time will tell if Avellone is right and Bethesda is really unable to craft a proper remaster for Fallout: New Vegas. By the way, in the interview, Avellone also revealed he's not a big fan of the highly successful Amazon Prime Video TV series, mainly because of its scriptwriting.
