[Original Report]: Elon has taken chipmaking ambitions a lot more seriously, as Tesla's preferred foundry partner, Samsung, will now set up an office for the billionaire in its Taylor fab.
Elon Musk Would Now Directly Oversee Taylor Fab Operations Around Tesla's Custom Silicon
We do know that Tesla has been pursuing volume production of its custom silicon, and the company has now included both Samsung and TSMC in its supply chain, with indications that it may also utilize Intel's services. Elon Musk has spoken about Tesla's 'bold plans' surrounding semiconductors, including the creation of a 'TeraFab', that would help meet the automaker's yearly demand of 100 billion to 200 billion chips. According to a report by the Korean media (via Jukan), Samsung's Chairman Lee Jae-yong reportedly paid a visit to the Taylor facility, where he met with CEO Elon Musk to discuss the AI5 and next-gen AI6 chips.
The interesting part about the report is that Elon will now have a 'dedicated office' in Samsung's Taylor facility, where he will personally oversee the production lines, to speed up the "feedback process". We do know that Tesla's CEO is fond of micro-managing several elements of his company, and it appears that chip manufacturing will be one of them. Tesla is Samsung's largest partner in the US for now, as both companies have struck a massive $16.5 billion deal, under which the Korean giant will provide an entire semiconductor ecosystem to Tesla.

Even after Samsung's extensive cooperation, Elon still believes that his foundry partners won't be able to meet the demand Tesla sees with its custom silicon, which is why he envisions building an independent chip supply chain. More importantly, Tesla's CEO wants 'stability' with his chip sourcing efforts, and relying on partners like TSMC brings concerns around whether the Taiwan giant could be a long-term partner, especially after factoring in geopolitical dynamics. Elon wants to be a part of the 'semiconductor revolution' happening in the US by building a supply chain from ground zero.
It would be interesting to see how Tesla's custom silicon project turns out, now that it faces tougher competition from other automotive firms, such as Rivian. And, as disclosed earlier, Elon says that his AI5 and AI6 chips are in their 'own segment' when it comes to competing with counterparts from NVIDIA and others.
