Elden Ring Movie Is Being Discussed, Says George R.R. Martin

George R.R. Martin is once again talking about an Elden Ring movie. The renowned author first teased a live action adaptation several months ago, and now, during IGN Fan Fest 2025, he has returned to discuss the subject. However, he also clarified his involvement may be minimal at best, especially since he already has a little something to finish:

Well, I can't say too much about it, but there is some talk about making a movie out of Elden Ring.  We'll see if the Elden Ring movie comes to pass and what the extent of my involvement was, I don't know. I'm a few years behind with my latest book, so that also limits the amount of things that I can do.

That little something is, of course, The Winds of Winter. Martin has been working in some capacity on the sixth novel of A Song of Ice and Fire since 2010, causing many fans to lose hope that it will ever be completed. In October 2022, he said the novel was finished for three-quarters, but clearly, he isn't done yet. Martin's work on Elden Ring was simply related to the worldbuilding component, anyway, so it's possible that if a movie adaptation does happen, he will only be asked to do some basic consulting.

Ahead of the release of the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, Game director Hidetaka Miyazaki spoke with The Guardian about the potential for Elden Ring to get on the big screen, stating that FromSoftware has no such expertise and would need a very strong and trusted partner to go on this journey. It just so happens that Sony, which has a ton of experience in adapting game franchises to live action and TV shows, recently became the largest shareholder of FromSoftware parent company Kadokawa Corporation.

Still, Elden Ring's true greatness lies in the gameplay. While the atmosphere is also great, the story is not what I would call movie-worthy in how it's structured. If the project does go forward, it will be interesting to see the choices they'll have to make to translate the narrative to this format.
