Black Myth: Wukong has surpassed 30 million sales, outpacing Elden Ring and reaching the impressive milestone almost two years quicker.

According to a document published recently by the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League of China (CYL), Game Science's Black Myth: Wukong has now surpassed 30 million units sold, and it did so considerably faster than FromSoftware's Elden Ring, which took more than three years to get there.

Moreover, while domestic sales were massive, over half of the sales came from gamers outside China, underscoring the game's global appeal. The primary platform was PC via Steam, although the PlayStation 5 version also delivered great sales. Black Myth: Wukong launched in August 2024 for PC and PS5, with the Xbox Series S and X versions only debuting one year later.

Wukong also won the Game of the Year prize at the Steam Awards 2024, voted directly by fans. Its critical reception was excellent, too; on Wccftech, the game earned an 8.5 out of 10 score from Francesco De Meo:

Black Myth: Wukong couldn't have been a better debut for Game Science. Although their action role-playing game may not be innovative, it's got great production values, it's fun to play, it's engaging, and it's beautiful to look at. Some minor issues, such as a challenge level that could be too low for some and an experience that gets a little stale over time, hold back the game a bit, but in all honesty, I wouldn't be surprised to see more than a few players name Black Myth: Wukong their Game of the Year.

Game Science is now working on Black Myth: Zhong Kui, which was announced last year during Gamescom. The game won't be a direct sequel to Wukong, although the development team was quick to reassure fans that the westward journey isn't over for the Monkey King. The studio is still working out how to differentiate Zhong Kui, so we might be in for a long wait before the game is done.
