Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate has been known to be in the works since the series' 35th anniversary in May 2021, but very little is known about the next main entry in the long-running JRPG series other than the fact that it will be powered by Unreal Engine 5. Since the game's reveal, we saw the release of four remakes, but series creator Yuji Horii recently teased that the game will be back in the spotlight starting later this month.

Speaking during the latest episode of the KosoKoso broadcast, the Dragon Quest series creator confirmed that a series livestream will air on May 27, which will celebrate the series' 40th anniversary. "I think we’ll be able to make an announcement about the next game. We’ll also have various other things besides the next game, so please look forward to it," Horii-san added.

The silence surrounding Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate has been truly deafening, especially considering how the series has never been more popular than it is now with the subsequent release of multiple successful games. While Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age brought the series back into the spotlight worldwide following the experiments that were its two immediate predecessors, the HD-2D remakes of the first three entries in the series and Dragon Quest VII Reimagined solidified the series' popularity in the current console generation.

The curiosity surrounding the next entry in the series is wholly justified not only by the jump to Unreal Engine 5, but also by how it will supposedly introduce some changes to the command battle system, which hasn't changed a whole lot since the days of the very first Dragon Quest. Developers believe this system will be fun, so it will be very interesting to see how it will respect the series legacy while offering a new experience.
