Square Enix Ignored Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Flat Lighting Since 2024, But A Modder Finally Fixed It

Characters Tifa Lockhart and Aerith Gainsborough from 'Final Fantasy VII Rebirth' stand ready for battle.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is widely considered as one of the best entries in the entire series to date, but this doesn't mean the game is without flaws. The most evident is the flat lighting which has a significant impact on the visuals of the game's open world, and a far cry from the significantly better lighting used for interiors. Although there was an attempt to fix the issue in places, it was never truly addressed, but this is now no longer an issue in the PC version of the game, as a Shader Injector mod has been released online to address an issue Square Enix never really did since the game's launch in 2024.

The mod developed by dddd5, now available for download from Nexus Mods, is a "DX12 (D3D12) based mod that intercepts the rendering API calls, and allows you to inject/replace the original shaders within the title with modified ones during runtime. The mod comes with two modified base game lighting shaders that drastically improve the lighting/shadow quality of the game for a minimal performance hit."

If the description sounds confusing to you, the comparison screenshots make it clear how much the mod improved the lighting. Although there are some issues, some of them addressed in the 1.1.0 update, and incompatibility with the Async Compile mod addressing stuttering issues, the difference is night and day, resulting in considerably better visuals all around.

The Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Shader Injector mod couldn't have come at a better time. Following the official announcement of Final Fantasy VII Revelation and the reveal of its substantial world map, the first two entries in the series have enjoyed renewed popularity, as players are either playing through the games for the first time or playing through them again ahead of the trilogy's conclusion release in Spring 2027. I will for sure playing through Rebirth for the third time once I am done with Remake with this Shader Injector mod, as it addresses my number one complaint about a game I believe is among the best modern JRPGs ever, if not the very best.
