Polish studio CD PROJEKT announced that Cyberpunk 2077 has surpassed the 40 million-unit sales milestone across all platforms. Michał Nowakowski, Joint-CEO of CD PROJEKT, said in a statement:

40 million copies sold shows the incredible, lasting strength of Cyberpunk 2077 and is a testament to what CD PROJEKT does best - creating high-quality, immersive stories that keep players returning for years. It's a great foundation for our upcoming projects in this universe, including the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 anime arriving this Fall.

This is particularly impressive because after a massive launch on the heels of the hype (Cyberpunk 2077 registered the highest digital launch ever with over 10 million units sold), sales slowed considerably for a while due to the infamous technical issues and bugs that mainly affected the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions. Sony even went to the nearly unprecedented length of temporarily removing the game from the PlayStation Store; Cyberpunk 2077 only returned to PSN around six months later, and even then, it carried a warning not to buy for PlayStation 4 for a while longer.

Eventually, though, CD PROJEKT turned around the reception thanks to the continuous pace of updates that improved the game, culminating with the release of Cyberpunk 2077 2.0 and the Phantom Liberty expansion in September 2023. By then, the game was well regarded once again, and its user review score on Steam had improved significantly. CD PROJEKT's Michał Nowakowski recently admitted that some fans may not have forgiven the studio for the faulty launch yet, though he hopes CD PROJEKT will win them back with either The Witcher 4 or another game.

On that note, other than the aforementioned anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, the studio is already working on a game sequel codenamed Project Orion. They have set up a team in the United States that's independent of the Polish office, so work on The Witcher 4 isn't slowing down the development of the new Cyberpunk project.

Late last year, Polish analyst firm Noble Securities shared its estimate that the next Cyberpunk game would launch in late 2030, with a $419 million budget and a multiplayer mode (which was supposed to be released for Cyberpunk 2077 but got canceled as the developers focused on improving the base game). PC users who still dream of roaming Night City with friends can, however, look forward to the CyberMP mod.
