Crucial has introduced a new memory specification within its DDR5 portfolio which features a capacity of 12 GB for desktop and laptop PCs.

More Consumer DDR5 Memory Options Are On The Way As Crucial Unveils 12 GB Capacity Modules

Since the introduction of DDR5 memory, we have not only covered the launch of faster memory but also higher capacities. While the standard 8 GB, 16 GB, and 32 GB capacities exist, there are more options available than ever before with the announcement of the non-binary series which offer 24 GB, 48 GB, and up to 64 GB capacities per module.

More capacity is always a great thing as it pushes the capabilities of the PC platform and there are even more options coming out. Crucial is adding a new DDR5 memory spec to its lineup, featuring up to 12 GB capacities. That's 50% more capacity than the standard 8 GB modules and will enable up to 24 GB capacities for a dual-channel setup. Rather than going for 24 GB modules, 12 GB will be cheaper and still provide a good improvement over 8 GB modules.

The new 12 GB DDR5 memory from Crucial has been listed at Amazon UK as spotted by hardware insider, Momomo_US. The specific modules have the part number "CT12G56C46S5" and feature a range of speeds that run at 5600 MT/s by default and can be downclocked to 5200/4800 MT/s. The features or specs of this memory module include:

  • 5600MHz RAM can downclock if the system specification only supports 5200MHz or 4800MHz
  • Enhance productivity, save time and money, game at higher frame rates, multitask better
  • Best for Intel Core 13th Gen and AMD Ryzen 6000 Series laptop CPUs and above
  • Compatible only with DDR5-enabled laptop, not DDR4-enabled laptops
  • ECC Type = Non-ECC, Form Factor = SODIMM, Pin Count = 262-pin, PC Speed = PC5-44800, Voltage = 1.1V, Rank and Configuration = 1Rx16

There are two kits available which include 12 GB (Single-DIMM) and 24 GB (Dual-DIMM 12 GB x 2) variants:

Crucial has yet to list this memory specification on its official webpage but we can expect it to be revealed rather soon since the listing reveals availability on 31st of March. We have seen newer DDR5 memory capacities roll down to both desktop & laptop PCs so more options will become available to everyone as time goes by. Desktop PCs have already enabled support for up to 256 GB+ memory capacities and we can expect this to increase in the future.
