Control Resonant is the long-awaited sequel to 2019's Control, yet another Remedy game praised for its execution on practically every front, but unable to find the commercial success its biggest fans believe it deserves. That said, the game is still one of Remedy's most successful titles ever, and the studio seems primed to ensure that it's sequel will be able to achieve that level of instant commercial success it has always chased by trying to match the quality of the team's storytelling chops with the core gameplay experience.
In the studio's latest development diary for Control Resonant, we get a few sneak peaks at gameplay from an early alpha build of the game, but more importantly we get insights from members of Remedy about how the studio is approaching working on Resonant. Namely, by putting as much behind the gameplay team as possible.
Which, according to executive producer Juha Vainio, means assembling "the biggest gameplay team in Remedy history. Which allows us to make more weapon forms, more paranatural abilities, more deeper gameplay systems, and the whole gameplay experience will then be much more solid, and I would say, much more fun."
Lead level designer Anne-Marie Grönroos continues, adding that another way in which the studio is evolving the gameplay experience is by moving beyond Control's arena-focused combat encounters, where players were simply locked in a room with a bunch of Hiss, and you had to kill them to get out.
Now that Control Resonant moves the gameplay into open streets, Remedy wasn't going to just put up four giant red glowing walls around you. Instead, it looked for ways to incentivize players to kill enemies, so players had more opportunities to engage with the combat in more meaningful ways.
It all supports what we've been seeing and hearing about Control Resonant so far. It truly does appear to be the studio's most ambitious game yet, and it even seems to be an internal feeling that the studio has taken a step forward with how it makes games with their work on Resonant.
Players were shocked when the initial reveal trailer for Control Resonant showed that the game would not only be moving on from Jesse Faden to her brother, but that it would not feature third-person shooting and would instead be a third-person melee action game.
But now that we've seen more of that Devil May Cry-inspired action, paired with today's new comments and gameplay looks from Remedy, it feels like the studio is really creating something special here. Hopefully, we won't have to wait too much longer before we can judge for ourselves, and Resonant is able to hit its 2026 release window.
