After rumours that Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 remasters were in the works, Treyarch came forward to confirm what's actually happening. The original Black Ops and Black Ops 2 are being ported to PS5 this coming July, thanks to the efforts of Iron Galaxy Studios.
The news was announced with a short post on Treyarch's official X (formerly Twitter) account, with a short message that didn't elaborate on what these ports would include or categorize them as proper 'remasters.' Instead, it simply said that the original games "are being ported to PlayStation in July, courtesy of our partners at Iron Galaxy."
The remaster rumours started when two new ratings for both games were spotted online, though since there was no addition of the word 'Remastered' in the ratings, it makes more sense for those to have been tied to these ports.
While it's great for PS5 players to know they'll be able to dig back into two of the most beloved Call of Duty titles across the entire franchise soon, this announcement leaves a lot of unanswered questions, like why ports or at least improved versions for Xbox and PC are left out of the announcement.
Regardless, this is also the latest sign (after Call of Duty: Vanguard's reveal for Xbox Game Pass yesterday) that, in place of the latest Call of Duty games in Xbox Game Pass, older games in the franchise will try to fill that void. How does new versions of Black Ops and Black Ops 2 on PlayStation support a rumour about what's next for Xbox Game Pass?
It's speculation, of course, but it's not the biggest leap to figure that these new versions will, eventually, be announced for Xbox Series. When they arrive, they'll more than likely do so directly into Game Pass. Though there doesn't seem to be a specific pattern to it, Vanguard's inclusion and the confirmation of these ports suggest that Xbox is slowly, but surely, adding the back catalogue of Call of Duty titles to its subscription service.
After all, Xbox will need something from its first-party studios to put on its subscription service, especially since the recent reports on coming layoffs make it sound like Xbox is massively shrinking its studio portfolio.
