Apple intends to equip the iPad Air with an OLED screen as soon as next year, harmonizing the display specs of the entire iPad lineup with the exception of the base iPad, which will continue to sport an LCD screen for now.
Apple to launch an OLED iPad Air as soon as 2027, with the production of the new display panels slated to commence by late 2026 or early 2027
According to ETNews, Apple will transition the iPad Air to an OLED screen by early next year, with Samsung Display expected to commence the mass production of these display panels by late 2026 or early 2027, with a formal launch expected between March and May of 2027.
With the launch of the new iPad Air, Apple will have transitioned the entirety of its iPad lineup to OLED screens, with the exception of the base iPad, which is expected to retain an LCD screen for now.
Of course, the iPad Pro witnessed subdued demand when Apple raised its price after equipping it with an OLED panel. To prevent a similar situation with the iPad Air, Apple intends to use a pared-down OLED panel that will sport a single-stack emissive layer, low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) thin-film transistors (TFT), and a hybrid substrate. With this simplified structure, Apple hopes to limit the extent of the ensuing price increase for the new iPad Air.
Do note that Apple has already equipped the iPad Pro with OLED panels. It also plans to equip the 8.5-inch iPad mini and MacBook Pro (14-inch and 16-inch variants) with this new display tech later this year.
