Apple is widely believed to have adopted TSMC's SoIC packaging for its upcoming M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, bringing with it an unprecedented level of silicon-related flexibility and granularity. Now, Apple's new Mac configurator is giving tantalizing confirmatory signals as to this eventuality.

We noted recently that, as per leaked anecdotes, Apple appears to be opting for TSMC's SoIC-MH packaging technology for its upcoming M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. For the benefit of those who might not be aware, the SoIC is a 3D packaging solution that allows for the horizontal and vertical stacking of multiple chips on to a single SoC-like chip.

This new packaging also facilitates the integration of multiple individual dies - such as the CPU, GPU, and the Neural Engine - onto a single package, which provides for an unprecedented level of flexibility due to the sheer number of die configurations that then become available. For instance, if you are the artsy type, you might choose to equip the M5 Pro/M5 Max chip with a greater number of GPU cores.

Meanwhile, in what is a tantalizing indication of its definitive adoption of SoIC packaging for the upcoming M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, Apple has revamped its Mac configurator page for online purchases.

While the previous version of the Mac configurator allowed you to select from a limited number of pre-built configurations for the processor, RAM, and storage before delving into the nitty-gritty of the Mac configuration process, its new iteration skips the pre-built configurations stage entirely, allowing users to jump right into the detailed configuration step.

We know Apple typically does not change functional UI elements just for the sake of a change. As such, its revamp of the Mac configurator hints at a latent desire for users to go beyond the pre-configured specs and explore the enhanced granularity that the Cupertino giant is now bringing to its Macs with the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips.

Meanwhile, as we noted recently, Apple will debut the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips with the new MacBook Pro models, which are expected to launch within the ongoing macOS 26.3 update cycle.
