Apple intends to complement its upcoming camera-equipped AirPods Pro with a dedicated AI pendant, with both devices expected to serve a niche segment within the overall wearable AI segment, one where subtlety seemingly reigns supreme, unlike the more in-your-face smart glasses.
Apple's upcoming AI pendant is likely to be roughly the size of an AirTag
We noted recently that Apple was developing a dedicated AI pin, with initial sales expectations set at 20 million units. The wearable AI pin would presumably come equipped with multiple cameras, a speaker, microphones, and wireless charging.
Now, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has clarified that the AI pin is more like an AI-enabled pendant around the size of an AirTag. As per additional details, Apple is designing its AI pendant as an accessory to the ubiquitous iPhones. Essentially, the device would serve as an always-on camera, replete with a microphone to act as a conduit for channeling commands to Siri - the Cupertino giant's bespoke voice assistant.
It is hardly a surprise, therefore, that some Apple employees have dubbed the planned AI pendant the "eyes and ears" of the iPhone. Of course, unlike the Humane AI Pin, Apple's AI pendant would not sport a projector or a display system. It would also rely heavily on its iPhone counterpart for most processing despite sporting an onboard chip, albeit comparable in power to the one that is housed within the AirPods or the Apple Watch. Even so, Apple engineers are still undecided whether to equip the AI pendant with dedicated speakers.
Apple is currently exploring two ways of allowing users to "wear" the device: either a clip that attaches the pendant to one's clothing or a dedicated necklace. Of course, Gurman prefaces this information by noting that the project is still in its nascent stage and could be terminated.
