The iPhone 16e is officially available in a multitude of regions, with Apple’s latest release carrying a $599 price, making it the most affordable model that supports the company’s generative AI features. To get buyers prepared for an upgrade, the Cupertino firm uploaded a video ad to YouTube on the very same day as the device’s release, highlighting some key features, including the aforementioned price, which Apple seems to believe will have customers flocking toward it.
On paper, the iPhone 16e appears a capable device until it is realized that Apple made several trade-offs, some of which were necessary
The 38-second ad is presented on YouTube in a traditional format, showing the iPhone 16e being carried around by an inflatable balloon. In the video description, the following details have been mentioned, talking about the handset’s powerful A18 chipset, incredible battery life, camera and its durability. Surprisingly, Apple’s custom C1 modem, which is one of the reasons why the iPhone 16e can flaunt such incredible battery life, was omitted from the marketing material.
“Get the latest iPhone at the greatest price. The new iPhone 16e is built for Apple Intelligence and powered by A18, the latest-generation chip. It comes with supersized battery life, a 48MP Fusion camera, and a durable design, all at a price you can’t ignore.”
Even though there is a massive $200 difference between the iPhone 16e and iPhone 16, Apple and its teams likely had to work overtime to accept the fact that the new handset would ship with more than its fair share of compromises. For instance, the single 48MP primary camera lacks sensor-shift optical image stabilization, an addition that is present in both the iPhone 16 and its immediate predecessor, the iPhone 15. The A18 is also a binned part, with Apple removing one GPU core from the configuration.
While this might not appear as a major difference, the binned A18 is 15 percent slower than the regular version in Geekbench 6 Metal while also losing to the A16 Bionic in 3DMark Wild Life Extreme Unlimited, a chipset that was found in the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, which launched back in 2022. Of course, who can forget the lack of MagSafe wireless charging, which Apple defends by saying that its target audience for the iPhone 16e only uses a wired connection and will not resort to wirelessly topping up this model.
Whatever decisions Apple made, the iPhone 16e is now the technology giant’s more affordable offering. You can check out the video ad above and let us know what you think in the comments.
