iPhone X’s Supply Constraint Force Apple To Reduce Face ID’s Quality Standards; A Gamble Worth Taking?
It’s no secret. Apple’s once again landed itself in a rut. The urge to introduce new features has led Cupertino to overestimate its supply chain’s capabilities. The iPhone X is the most sought after iPhone in recent history. In similar suit, it’s also the device that’s faced the most supply chain problems. Apple Instructs Suppliers To Lower Accuracy For iPhone X’s Face ID In Order To Boost Production
With the iPhone X, Apple’s ventured into new territory. Facial recognition via 3D sensing is an entirely new concept, when considered in lieu with a smartphone’s space constraints. That’s what makes Face ID unique and contributes to the public’s massive interest in the iPhone X. However, looking at Apple’s supply chain, things are far from peachy. Cupertino and its manufacturing partners face a host of problems.
However, while until now Face ID’s problems were expected to only cause late deliveries, looks like Apple’s thrown in the towel. Bloomberg now reports that. “[Apple has] quietly told suppliers they could reduce the accuracy of the face-recognition technology to make it easier to manufacture” That’s big news, given how seriously Cupertino takes its manufacturing standards and terminates supplier relationships for their inability to meet them.
Out of Face ID’s three components, it’s the Dot Projector that’s causing the most problems. The projector works by combining tiny components that emit laser beams and focus them on the user’s face. Even a micron of deviation in assembly results in unsatisfactory performance. The company has also relaxed testing requirements for Face ID, which were at the heart of delays. All of this relaxation raise a critical question, however. Will Face ID still work as seamlessly as promised by Apple last month?
It’s a bet that will send some jitters down investor spines. After all, it’s not like Cupertino hasn’t struggled with new launches in the past. And a feature as promising as facial recognition will generate significantly more media attention than the past. As always, things will become clear once the iPhone X is widely available.
