The iPhone 20 will celebrate Apple’s 20-year run of introducing its first model in 2007, with Omdia’s senior researcher stating that the ‘iPhone 19’ name will be skipped in the process. Fortunately, a name switch isn’t the only change that we should expect because past reports have mentioned that the 20th-anniversary release slated to happen in the third quarter of 2027 will have an ‘all screen’ design with no visible cutouts. As for the latest update, a ‘four-sided bending design’ could be adopted, with LG making preparations by injecting a massive sum into its display facility, but it isn’t as simple as we’re making it out to be.
Back in 2023, Apple reportedly requested a full-screen iPhone display from Samsung and LG; the entire process requires revamped steps that are thoroughly complicated
The iPhone 20’s bezel-less display will differ significantly from what we’ve seen churned out by the industry. On this occasion, Dealsite reports that all four corners will sport a bending shape, which requires bending the panel circuit in the bezel area. To achieve this, the TFE (Thin-Film Encapsulation) that prevents moisture build-up in the OLED area must also be thinner. Also, the ‘all screen’ design will not be complete until the front-facing camera, the TrueDepth sensor, and all of its necessary components are housed behind the display.
The iPhone 18 family and iPhone Fold are rumored to be tested with under-display Face ID, meaning that there are chances that Apple will only adopt a punch-hole cutout housing the front-facing camera as the first steps towards creating a truly bezel-less iPhone. While Samsung is currently focused on supplying foldable OLEDs for the iPhone Fold, LG is apparently considering a 400 billion won, or nearly $300 million investment to achieve this four-sided bending design.
The Korean manufacturer is required to make immense modifications to its production line to accommodate the iPhone 20’s unique design, and there are even talks that LG could be setting up around 10 lines for its lucrative customer. There is no confirmation on what Samsung’s plans are for the iPhone 20, but given that the latter has always supplied the lion’s share of Apple’s OLED panels, it will have to make a massive investment and set up factories to mass-produce the futuristic displays.
