Apple Confirms That it is Working on an Autonomous Vehicle
Thus far there have only been rumors regarding Apple's plan for an autonomous vehicle. But now, the company has confirmed that it is indeed working on something.
The Autonomous Car Revelation Was Made in a Letter to NHTSA by Apple
From time and time again we have been hearing rumors that Apple is working on an autonomous vehicle. We even got wind of the news that the company might even ditch its plan altogether to focus on something else. But interestingly, a letter has emerged, addressed to the U.S. NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) in which Apple has confirmed its ongoing efforts to work on an autonomous transport system.
The letter was written by Apple's Director of Product Integrity Steve Kenner. The letter basically addresses how safe autonomous vehicles are as Apple's system uses 'machine learning' to ensure everything is smooth on the road.
Apple uses machine learning to make its products and services smarter, more intuitive, and more personal. The company is investing heavily in the study of machine learning and automation, and is excited about the potential of automated systems in many areas, including transportation.
Apple goes on to discuss a bunch of things in the letter including the fact that it shouldn't be treated differently from others since it is not solely a car manufacturing company. Basically, Apple wants no hurdles in its way when it is out and about testing its autonomous transportation system.
Despite all these revelations, it's unclear how Apple's autonomous vehicle will actually work. It's quite a possibility that Apple's product might actually be a system that will end up being incorporated in cars, rather than being a full-blown car itself. On the other hand, some pundits suspect Apple's autonomous car efforts to actually be a service rather than a product. There are a lot of aspects you can dive deep into just to see what Apple could be working on. For now, we know for a fact that Apple is highly interested in autonomous vehicles and wants the NHTSA to treat it as equally as Ford.
We will update our readers if there is more news on this front in the near future. Feel free to speculate on what Apple could be working on.
