Apple executives want Siri to be the next ChatGPT with current chatbot's performance on par with the latest version

Apple Intelligence has experienced a bit of backlash when it comes to the delivery of some notable features. The company promised to release the Personalized Siri feature earlier this year with iOS 18.4, but the update never included the new Siri experience. Nonetheless, the company has been working on the delayed Personalized Siri and has developed it into a usable utility for the general public. Apart from this, a new report claims that the company's internal AI chatbot, which will likely be integrated with Siri, is 'on par' with ChatGPT, at least according to company executives.

Despite hesitation from its AI chief, Apple executives really want Siri to be the next ChatGPT

While Apple's AI side of things is at a halt, for now, we are hearing that the company is making tremendous progress in developing Siri. Bloomberg published a new report citing that Apple is internally testing an AI chatbot and, by the looks of it, it is 'on par' with ChatGPT. If the news has any heft to it, Apple's efforts will definitely be rewarded, especially after the negative impression the company had to go through due to the delay of some features.

The report mentions that Apple's AI chief, John Giannandrea, was hesitant to transform Siri into a ChatGPT-like experience. He argues for the value of such a product, which can be put to debate, but the current version of Siri is nowhere near the level of OpenAI's chatbot in terms of usability as well as utility. Despite these reservations, Apple's executives are "pushing to turn Siri into a true ChatGPT competitor."

With that said, the company is already internally testing an AI chatbot, and based on initial results, it is "on par with the recent versions of ChatGPT." The report states:

As for Apple’s homegrown chatbot efforts, some executives are now pushing, despite Giannandrea’s prior reluctance, to turn Siri into a true ChatGPT competitor. To that end, the company has started discussing the idea of giving the assistant the ability to tap into the open web to grab and synthesize data from multiple sources. According to employees, the chatbot the company has been testing internally has made significant strides over the past six months, to the point that some executives see it as on par with recent versions of ChatGPT.

We have previously heard that the company is working on an advanced LLM for Siri, which will be released in the coming months, but it is unclear if the report is talking about the same model. Moreover, we believe that Apple should give in and release a dedicated chatbot similar to ChatGPT if it wants to boost user productivity. Apple could release the new LLM Siri as soon as iOS 19, but since the company has previously delayed major features, we suspect the dates could stretch further. In any case, we will keep you updated with the latest details.
