AMD's Ryzen 9000 "Zen 5" Desktop CPUs have now dropped to their lowest prices yet, with the 12-core 9900X down to just $359.
AMD Ryzen 9000 "Zen 5" Desktop CPUs Continue To See Price Drops; 9900X Down at $359 & 9600X at $229
AMD's Ryzen 9000 "Zen 5" Desktop CPUs have not only received official price cuts since the launch of the Ryzen 7 9800X3D but continue to receive further discounts from retailers. These discounts make the Ryzen 9000 family far better than their initial perf/$ ratings, which were a bit lackluster. However, over the past couple of weeks, AMD has not just strengthened the value proposition of its latest Ryzen desktop offerings but also optimized the performance by a big margin, now making for a competitive product.
The latest price cuts come from popular US retailer, Microcenter, who has listed each of the four Ryzen 9000 "Zen 5" CPUs at impressive prices. Starting at the top, we have the Ryzen 9 9950X 16-core chip which is currently available for $569.99, an $80 US drop versus its initial MSRP (-12.3%). This places the chip very competitively against the Intel Core Ultra 9 285K and offers better gaming and multithreaded performance in a vast range of workloads.
- Ryzen 9 9950X - $569.99 US (-12.3%)
- Ryzen 9 9900X - $359.99 US (-28.0%)
- Ryzen 7 9700X - $309.99 US (-13.9%)
- Ryzen 5 9600X - $229.99 US (-17.9%)
Following the Ryzen 9 9950X is AMD's Ryzen 9 9900X, which is now available for just $359.99 US. This is a major price drop from the initial MSRP of $499 US (-28%). With this pricing, the chip sits closer to the Core Ultra 5 245K and offers both higher multithreaded performance and also good gaming capabilities.
Next up is the AMD Ryzen 7 9700X which is listed for $309.99 US. This is a $50 US savings versus the initial MSRP of $359.99 US (-13.9%). One can get the much faster Ryzen 9 9900X at this price point, but it's still good to see the pricing of the 8-core Zen 5 chip reaching close to the $300 US figure. There was a time when the 7800X3D was priced similarly through discounts, but that chip has been inflated north of $400 US and is also hard to come by at major retailers. The Core Ultra 5 245K does seem like the better option versus the 9700X in multithreaded workloads, but gaming performance is where the 9700X beats it with ease. Meanwhile, the 14600K/13600K are still potent at this price point, offering great performance at under $300 US.
Lastly, we have the AMD Ryzen 5 9600X which is now available for $229.99 US, a $50 US savings versus the $279.99 US initial MSRP (-17.9%). This is another major drop and, for a 6-core Zen 5 chip, the pricing is indeed decent. AMD's Zen 4-based Ryzen 5 offerings are closer to $200 US and even under $200 US at certain retailers. We expect that the price of this part will come down to $199 - $209 US in the next few months.
Overall, it looks like through these retailer-specific discounts, AMD will change the market reception towards its non-X3D chips, making the Ryzen 9000 "Zen 5" offerings a viable solution of the socket AM5 platform which is now expected to support the next-generation Zen 6 CPUs too.
