AMD's upcoming Radeon RX 7700 XT GPU is reportedly going to be faster than the Radeon RX 6800 in 3DMark Time Spy.

AMD announced its Radeon RX 7700 XT graphics card last week, featuring the brand new Navi 32 GPU core based on the RDNA 3 architecture. During the launch presentation, AMD compared the Radeon RX 7700 XT against the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti but didn't show the performance that it's capable of offering versus its RDNA 2 predecessors.

Well, it looks like HXL (@9550pro) has managed to get some early information about the synthetic performance within 3DMark Time Spy and it looks surprisingly good. It is claimed that the Radeon RX 7700 XT scores around 17,000 points within the graphics test in 3DMark Time Spy. If we were to compare this score against the RDNA 2 cards, then the card would comfortably sit faster than the Radeon RX 6800 graphics card which was an enthusiast-grade product during its launch, based on the Navi 21 GPU.

In addition to the alleged performance number, we also get to see the GPU-z screenshot of AMD's Radeon RX 7700 XT graphics card. Do note that this is the unsupported version so certain metrics may not be correct such as ROPs which are confirmed to be 96. Interestingly, the GPU die size has been listed at 346mm2 which if correct should be just slightly bigger than the Navi 22 GPU which measured at 335mm2. That's a 3% bigger die size but we should also remember that the die size counts the entire die area which also includes the MCDs so the GCD area should be much smaller than the Navi 22 die.

While synthetic performance isn't an actual representation of gaming performance, the 3DMark Time Spy score against the RX 6800 shows that the card is a very formidable option with its price category. If the card truly ends up faster than the RX 6800, then the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti 8 GB and 16 GB cards are in for a major knockout as AMD can easily win the performance/$ game here.

Furthermore, for people suggesting that the RX 6800 16 GB itself might be a better buy over the RX 7700 XT, it should be remembered that the card is no longer a mass-produced variant so the existing inventories should be very limited. The card does cost $500 US with some deals bringing it down to $450 US but the RX 7700 XT supports HYPR-RX with Anti-Lag+ plus FSR 3 with Anti-Lag+ is also said to work great with RDNA 3 GPUs so that's something to keep in mind. Plus, you'll also be getting the efficiency advantage as the RX 7700 XT should consume around 100W less since the RX 6800 custom cards (which are the ones you can buy right now) come with higher TDPs out of the box.

Overall, the AMD Radeon RX 7700 XT should be a great buy for RX 5700 XT and even RX 6700 XT GPU owners but an even better deal exists in the form of the RX 7800 XT which costs just $50 US more and will potentially eat up the sales of the 7700 XT due to very close pricing. AMD's Radeon RX 7700 XT & RX 7800 XT GPUs launch on the 6th of September so reviews will be out very soon.
