AMD FSR 4 demo shows gaming is now more pleasant with better visual stability on the Radeon RX 9070 GPUs.

AMD Shows Comparison Between FSR 3.1 & FSR 4 at CES, Revealing Significant Visual Quality Differences

Apart from teasing the RDNA 4 GPU lineup, i.e., the Radeon RX 9070 GPUs at CES, AMD also showed off its latest upscaling technology called FSR 4 or FidelityFX Super Resolution 4. The FSR 4 takes over the current FSR 3.1 technology and aims to deliver superior image quality on the Radeon RX 9000 GPUs.

As demonstrated by Hardware Unboxed, AMD's FSR 4 was compared with the FSR 3.1 side-by-side at the CES event. FSR 4 shows some great improvements over the previous 3.1 edition, particularly in the Performance mode, which usually brings much inferior visual quality to the Quality mode. In this particular instance (Rachet & Clank: Rift Apart), we can see FSR 4 bringing good clarity in this transparent green chamber, which shows particles quite clearly.

On the other hand, the FSR 3.1 showed fewer details and a lot of shimmering and garbling. This was pretty evident even without zooming in. Now similar stuff can be seen in another instance where the ring around the character lacks definition and appears to be shimmery. With the FSR 4, it is much more refined and there is no shimmering.

One of the major noticeable changes with FSR 4 is the reduction of ghosting significantly. While the screenshot of such instances in gameplay won't show you a clear difference, here is an example that shows FSR 4's dominance in ghosting reduction. Look at the falling particles, which appear smooth and without any ghosting effect with FSR 4, but with FSR 3.1, this doesn't look good at all. Moreover, the audience sitting in the stadium appears to be more detailed with FSR 4.

In the following instance, you can see a clear case of significant shimmering on the staircase with FSR 3.1, but with FSR 4, this is almost 100% fixed, and it looks quite good and smooth even without zooming in.

All in all, from ghosting to shimmering, one of the major problems of FSR 3.1 has been fixed with AMD's FSR 4. The upscaling technique is going to be released soon and Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart are the first titles to feature this technology.
