According to Remedy, newcomers won't have any trouble getting into the story, as it was designed to accommodate those who may not have played the first installment.

Alan Wake 2 features a co-protagonist, a brand new character called Saga Anderson. She's an FBI agent investigating a series of ritualistic killings in the small town of Bright Falls with the help of fellow agent Alex Casey.

The game starts with players taking control of Anderson; after certain events, Alan Wake will become available, too, and players will have the chance to select which story they want to tackle first.

The paths are said to be different but intertwined. Anderson dives into a nightmare as she finds pages of a horror story that slowly come true, and the trail of her investigation leads to Alan Wake himself, a writer that went missing around thirteen years ago. As for Alan, he's been imprisoned somewhere beyond the real world and is trying to escape by writing a story.

The game takes place in several handcrafted locations, such as Bright Falls, the forest of Cauldron Lake, a town called Watery, and the Dark Place, where Alan is trapped.

The gameplay is said to be inspired by classic survival horror, with limited resources available to the characters. However, as in the original, they can still rely on light as their greatest asset against darkness.

Alan Wake 2 will be available on PC via the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S|X. Pre-orders are now open on the Epic Games Store.
