In the middle of making 007 First Light, developer IO Interactive suddenly found itself working with a different partner than the ones it had successfully pitched its James Bond game to. At the time, Amazon taking over the James Bond IP didn't mean much, as 007 First Light would still get made without issue or interference from the company. Now that the game is out, however, the question of a sequel has been muddier than expected, and Amazon Games general manager Jeff Gattis is trying to clear the air.
Part of the concern and questions around a sequel are a result of a previous statement from Gattis, where he said, "We did not make 007 First Light. We do have a stake in it because we now own the IP, but that IP acquisition happened after the First Light IO deal was already done. We didn't have the full rights to this First Light James Bond game, but sequels will be done by MGM and, theoretically, by Amazon Game Studios."
It's easy to see how that statement made many question if IO Interactive would be in on a sequel at all, and if Amazon already had an idea of taking the franchise elsewhere. IO Interactive chief executive officer Hakan Abrak cooled players' concerns a bit by saying it is "very possible" the IOI team will be back with another First Light game, but now Gattis is speaking in more direct terms to make it clear that the only truth in all of this confusion is that nothing is set in stone just yet.
"First of all, let me set the record straight for you," Gattis began in a statement given to IGN. "I did not confirm that Amazon Game Studios is publishing the next one. Did not say that. So unfortunately, it got picked up, and once it runs, it runs. No, IO's been great. They've been great partners. In fact, I was over there visiting them in Copenhagen a couple of months ago. The game's doing great. Let's let the game breathe and have its day."
"Trust that we're going to be smart about this," Gattis continued. "I mean, it's market appetite. As long as we feel there's a desire for players to have the game, it's safe to say it's going to be made." A statement that would be much easier to trust if Amazon Games didn't just kill its MMO New World, which was actually gaining momentum at the point it was shuttered.
When pressed about whether 007 First Light's commercial success was already enough to greenlight a sequel, Gattis ended off by saying, "Seems like a sequel should be made."
So while Gattis' initial comments may have made things a bit foggy, we can now say that both sides are open to continuing, and with the game's continued commercial success, we can expect discussions on a sequel to happen. Gattis also previously emphasized Amazon's interest in having games that go along with the TV shows and films it is making for Prime Video. We know we'll get more Bond films, so if Amazon's goal is to have a game to go alongside it, we'll hopefully see a new game confirmed sooner than later.
