Intel would be launching its 3rd Generation Ivy Bridge processors on 23rd March featuring the latest 22nm Tri-Gate Architecture and improved performance/watt over Sandy Bridge processors. We saw some great results with Engineering Samples of the chip going past 7GHz barrier earlier however recent reports suggest that Ivy Bridge could be a far worse overclocker than Sandy Bridge.
First of all, The retail version of the Ivy Bridge with the E1 Stepping 9 would be a burden for overclocking on air considering the temperatures and high voltages they require. We saw this earlier from a benchmark comparison posted on XtremeSystems.org where an Ivy Bridge Core i7 3770K ES was overclocked to 4.8Ghz at 1.31V however the temperatures went pass 100C barrier, 95C while running Linpack and 90C with SuperPi benchmark.
Similar reports are surfacing from China suggesting that Ivy Bridge would require additional cooling preferably LN2 to reach 5.5GHz+ and hefty air coolers for 4.5GHz+ overclocks, Comparatively, Sandy Bridge could easily reach 5GHz with most Air-Coolers available in Market.
It would be better for overclockers to keep their Sandy Bridge processors for now and wait until reviews arrive to see if the issue is indeed real, If true then we would have to wait for another revised stepping in the future from Intel.
