XDefiant Beta Extended, Devs Weigh in On Adding Killstreaks to the Game

The beta for Ubisoft’s new crossover multiplayer shooter XDefiant kicked off earlier this month, and the reaction has been mixed, although generally more positive than many were expecting. While the beta suffered from its share of server issues and bugs, and betas often do, players responded surprisingly well to the game's Call-of-Duty-style gameplay and viewership numbers on Twitch were impressive.

Well, if you want to get a few more XDefiant games in before this round of testing closes you can, as Ubisoft has extended the closed beta. The beta was originally supposed to end late last night (April 23 at 11pm) but will instead continue on until April 25 at 11pm.

Ubisoft San Francisco executive producer Mark Rubin also recently provided some updates on the studio’s plans following the beta. One big request for XDefiant are Call-of-Duty-style killstreaks, but according to Rubin that’s not happening. That said, a mode that rewards you for stringing kills together may be in the works.

“We don't currently have any plans for killstreaks, but what if we made a mode where 3 kills got you your ability and 7 your Ultra or something along those lines?”

Haven’t been keeping up with XDefiant? As mentioned, it features maps and characters inspired by Ubisoft’s various “Tom Clancy” properties (Splinter Cell, Rainbow Six, ect.) and gameplay that takes aim at the Call of Duty franchise. That said, unlike CoD, it will be free to play. Wccftech’s Alessio Palumbo came away fairly impressed following hands-on time with the game, but was unsure if it was unique enough to carve out a niche in a crowded market…

“I didn't really have a lot of time to play, but what I experienced indicated that the game has decent, fun fast-paced gunplay, though I would be hard-pressed to say that it's enough to make it stand out among the plethora of similar shooters available on the market, even with the faction spin.”

XDefiant is expected to launch on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, and PS5 sometime in 2023. If you’d like to hop into the tail end of the current beta, you can register here.
