In a briefing with TechCrunch earlier today, Apple revealed its plans for Mac Pro and iMac. Everyone was taken by surprise with the company's out of character apology for a long "pause in upgrades and update" and openly sharing its plans for the lineup. However, Apple also shared some interesting numbers that will definitely make fans in the Microsoft corner giggle with joy.
“If we’ve had a pause in upgrades and updates, we’re sorry for that - what happened with the Mac Pro - and we’re going to come out with something great to replace it.”
Apple Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing Phil Schiller boasted at the press meeting today that the Mac user base is nearing 100 million users. With these fresh figures on Mac users, it is confirmed that the Mac is overshadowed by the Windows' latest version alone. In comparison to Mac's 100 million users, Windows 10 has over 400 million users - a number that was revealed by Microsoft a few months back.
Windows 7 users may have been hating Windows 10, but the OS is still a massive success when compared to Macs
Microsoft has long dominated the desktop OS market so the latest numbers are anything but shocking since Apple has focused on iPhones, even more so in the past couple of years. However, today's numbers confirm that the company is way ahead of Apple even with Windows 10 alone - an operating system that attracted huge user backlash for privacy concerns, forced updates, keylogging reports, and much more.
While it may appear that Windows 10 is only four times more popular than the Mac, the user base could be much stronger now since Microsoft revealed these stats back in September of last year. In comparison, Schiller's number encompasses all Mac computers, including those that may be running the older version of macOS (previously known as OS X).
However, this is not a bad news for a company like Apple. No way. Schiller added that as a business Mac is nearing a $25 billion run rate and is big enough to soon being a Fortune 100 company on its own. Apple also revealed that its MacBook lineup makes up 80 percent of all Mac shipments, with desktop computers lagging behind at 20%.
Microsoft is about to launch a newer version of its Windows 10 later today, with the company planning to introduce at least two new Surface devices this year. On the other hand, Apple received tepid reception of its 2016 MacBook Pro. However, the company has confirmed that the sales have been strong, with 20 percent growth in fiscal Q1 YoY. The iPhone maker won't be bringing new Mac Pro until 2018, with new iMacs expected this year, the company told the press.
Apple has a long way to match Windows (or even Windows 10), but Microsoft is fighting its own battle against Android. The company has dominated the OS market with Windows for several decades. Earlier this week, statistics revealed that Android has managed to overtake Windows to become the most-used operating system in the world. With today's numbers, Microsoft has at least something to be happy about.
