What’s the New Windows 10 Tablet Experience Introduced with Last Night’s Build
Microsoft released quite a big Preview Build to Fast ring Insiders last night, bringing both the Cloud Download and a new Windows 10 tablet experience for convertible PCs. The Windows maker said that this new experience will enable users to stay in the familiar desktop mode without interruption.
It also includes some key improvements, including: increased spacing between Taskbar icons, search box on taskbar collapsed into an icon, File Explorer switches to touch optimized layout, and Touch keyboard auto invokes when you tap text fields.
New Windows 10 tablet experience isn't yet available to all the Fast ring Insiders
This new Windows 10 tablet experience isn't to be confused with the "Windows 10 Tablet Mode," which is still present in the operating system. Note that this new experience isn't available to everyone in the Fast ring and has only been offered to a small subset of Insiders who update to Windows 10 20H1 Build 18970. The company will test the quality and then release the feature to more Insiders.
Microsoft said that the new tablet experience will automatically activate when you are using a 2-in-1 and fold the keyboard or remove it.
Here are the steps once it becomes available on your PC:
- Use your convertible PC as a laptop as you normally would–opening apps and interacting with them.
- When you’re ready to pick it up and go or simply lean back on the couch, you can fold back the keyboard or remove it altogether, and it should switch to this new mode shown above.
- Now use your device as a tablet with touch.
Folks at WindowsCentral have shared a hands-on video of this new desktop-like tablet experience.
