Unreal Engine 5.4

Judging from another Unreal Engine 5.4 tech demo, native 4K resolution is increasingly looking like a resolution that only the absolute best GPUs will be able to handle with decent performance.

A few hours ago, MxBenchmark PC shared a new video showing the Forgotten Cemetery demo created by Scans Factory running at 4K and 1440p resolutions, Epic settings on an RTX 4080 GPU. As seen in other tech demos powered by the latest version of the engine by Epic, the NVIDIA GPU, which is still among the most powerful GPUs on the market, is not able to handle native 4K resolution properly in both daytime and nighttime only managing to hit the 50, 60 FPS mark in a few scenarios. Performance is definitely better at 1440p resolution, although framerate is not particularly stable.

While these Unreal Engine 5.4 are definitely not optimized, they do show that the engine still needs plenty of work to reach an acceptable level of performance. The latest version of the engine brings significant performance improvements, but stability still leaves something to be desired, according to an analysis shared last month.

Besides performance improvements, Unreal Engine 5.4 brings a new Nanite Adaptive Tessellation option, Heterogenous Volumes, which can produce realistic and dynamic smoke and clouds, improved Temporal Super Resolution upscaling, easier implementation of AI and machine learning tools, performance and shared compilation improvements and much more. More information on the engine can be found on its official website.
