A new Toy Story 5 teaser was released by Pixar at Disney’s 2024 D23 conference, with the movie slated for a 2026 release. If you noticed some familiarities, then you have the same level of depth-perception as another eagle-eyed individual who found out that the short clip is anything but new because a small comparison reveals that the teaser was actually using Apple Watch face assets from 2017. The animated film will bring back iconic characters such as Woody, Buzz, and Jessie, but you should look at the comparison and see what we refer to.
Animations have had their black backgrounds edited, but the original assets were created by Pixel for watchOS 4
The teaser starts with Woody running up and waving, followed by Jessie letting out a big wink and Buzz running left to deliver a salute. If any reader can recall some familiarity with these animations, then they would be correct because, according to X user @DylanMcD8, who uploaded a comparison video, they were originally created by Pixar for watchOS 4.
The person posting the comparison notes that the black background had been edited so the characters could appear out of a blue one, but that does not change the fact that these animations are being re-used for something that launched 7 years ago.
Stealing the idea for this from a friend but yeah these are literally just the animations from the watchOS 4 Toy Story Apple Watch face 💀
They even look like they've had a back background edited out https://t.co/aGlrI7YgV1 pic.twitter.com/cvk63GuJdS

Aether, who goes by the X handle @AetherAurelia, initially discovered the similarities, and it indicates that because Toy Story 5 is launching in 2026, its animations have yet to be diversified to the point that Pixar ends up using new ones rather than the ones it designed for watchOS 4.
Shortly after the discovery, other X users started to take note of the lack of differences, which should not be the case for a powerhouse of an animation studio. Hopefully, Pixar will take note of this and develop a better teaser in the future, but for now, recycled assets are all that the company has to show.
