Enthusiasts who love to push their CPUs to the next level of performance may opt for Delidding, which is the process of removing the IHS or heat spreader from the processor. This process is a bit complex and usually voids the warranty. Even though companies like Thermal Grizzly offer tools for delidding, you will still end up voiding your warranty if you do it yourself.
So why not let Thermal Grizzly do it for you? This is exactly what Thermal Grizzly is now offering to users with the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU. At the moment, it's the only CPU that is being offered by the company as pre-delidded but shortly, the Ryzen 9 9950X3D will also be offered pre-delidded. Since this process requires precision and specialized tools, expect Thermal Grizzly to do the job with much more precision and safety than you may do.
In the blog post, Thermal Grizzly announced a new program that will offer the delidded Ryzen 7 9800X3D with two years of warranty, which eliminates is much more secure than doing delidding by yourself. The process involves using Delid-Die-Mate and using an Oven to delid the IHS from the processor's chiplets. Once it's done, the processor chiplets are cleaned properly and shipped to you.
The box will also include both the CPU and IHS and will provide the users with the testing results post-delidding. The delidded processor is tested using a setup in programs like Cinebench R23 using a high-performance heat spreader. The results are noted and included in the box for reference. Plus, screenshots of the test as well as a microscopic image of the delidded processor will also be provided inside a USB stick.
Thermal Grizzly recommends Direct-Die cooling solutions for delidded CPUs such as Mycro Direct-Die, Mycro Direct-Die Pro, and the High-Performance Heat Spreader to enhance thermal performance. These are some expensive parts that will add more cost to the price of delidded CPUs.
Thermal Grizzly has priced the AMD TG Delidded Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU at $712.95, including VAT and shipping costs. This is an addition of roughly $233 on top of the official MSRP of 9800X3D, which is $479.
