The Wolf Among Us 2 has been missing for so long that it's started to reach mythical levels of 'games in development hell.' It's been nearly a decade since it was first revealed, and in that time, a lot has happened. Now, a new rumour points to the game's development having been restarted for (at least) a second time, and that it's being co-developed with an unnamed studio in Argentina. It claims that it'll be ready by 2027, and that we may even get a remaster of The Wolf Among Us to go along with it.

Firstly, a reminder of how we got here. Development on The Wolf Among Us 2 began in 2017, only to be paused in 2018 when Telltale Games shut down.

Then, Telltale was revived in 2019, with development on the game officially kicking back up before the end of that year, though the studio clarified soon after that it wasn't picking up where it left off, and was instead restarting from scratch. As we turned into 2020, it was initially set to arrive in 2023, but was delayed beyond that window as the studio moved to building the game on Unreal Engine 5.

We got a look at some screenshots in 2024, followed by Telltale further shutting down rumors that the game had been cancelled, confirming that it was still working on it and that an update would be given "when the time is right." Since then, it's been crickets from Telltale Games, and the last word we heard on the game was from former members of the Telltale team who would go on to form AdHoc Studio, the team behind last year's beloved indie adventure game, Dispatch.

According to Nick Herman, a former Telltale writer and co-founder of AdHoc, shortly after AdHoc had been formed, Herman and the AdHoc team had agreed to work on The Wolf Among Us 2 alongside Telltale. Herman confirmed that during that period, the AdHoc team had written a Season 2 for The Wolf Among Us that they thought was "better than Season One."

Herman explained that essentially, the reason AdHoc stopped working on The Wolf Among Us 2 is because they weren't running the project, Telltale was, and while Telltale needed more time to move forward, AdHoc couldn't afford to rest on its laurels and do nothing. "We had to move on to Dispatch to keep the studio moving, and they needed to go their own way," Herman said. "We're looking forward to seeing what they do with it."

Herman added that they are unsure how much of the script AdHoc wrote will stay in whatever final version of the game gets released, but that "if one day we were able to make the thing that we wrote and were in the middle of directing, we think people would love it."

Which brings us to this new rumor from the Spanish-speaking publication, PressOver, who claim that sources they've spoken to indicate the game is being made in co-development with a studio in Argentina that it did not name to protect its sources' anonymity. On top of the sequel finally arriving next year, we may see a remaster or "enhanced version" (quote via machine translation) of the first game before the sequel arrives. At least one explanation for why development has taken as long as it did is that work on the game was restarted, which, as far as we know, would be the second time the game has started back from zero.

If PressOver's report is accurate, we'll hear about the release date for The Wolf Among Us 2 before the end of 2026, though, as is always the case with these kinds of rumors, especially considering that Telltale is a studio which rarely delivers official communications, take it with a grain of salt.

That said, hopefully, we'll be able to look forward to The Wolf Among Us 2 arriving next year.
