The long-awaited Subnautica 2 has made a truly explosive debut. Shortly after the game's early access launch on PC and Xbox Series S|X, Unknown Worlds announced it had become a million-seller. Now, the survival exploration game has already sailed past the striking milestone of 2 million copies sold worldwide within just 12 hours of launch, holding the No. 1 spot on Steam's global top sellers charts across multiple countries.

Peak concurrent players across Steam, the Epic Games Store, and Xbox exceeded 651,000, with Steam alone accounting for more than 467,000 of those. To put that into perspective, that figure is approximately nine times the all-time peak concurrent player count of the original Subnautica, which launched in 2018. The momentum extended to streaming platforms as well. On Twitch, Subnautica 2 reached more than 413,000 peak concurrent viewers and ranked No. 1 across all categories, not just gaming. YouTube Live added another 109,000 peak concurrent viewers, ranking first in the gaming category.

Player reception has been equally strong. The game currently holds a "Very Positive" user rating on Steam with 92% positive reviews, with players frequently praising the Unreal Engine 5-powered visuals, the four-player co-op, the survival and crafting systems, and the narrative experience.

For those unfamiliar with the sequel, Subnautica 2 is set on an entirely new alien planet, in a deliberate departure from the original's planet 4546B. That means a new ecology, new creatures, and a new story centered on a failed human colony. Speaking to the media ahead of yesterday's debut, Unknown Worlds described the design target as roughly "a third new, a third the same, and a third improved." The game introduces new systems, including Adaptations and Biomods as biological progression mechanics, a fully overhauled sculptural base building system, and the Tadpole, a new modular submersible with swappable chassis. The franchise's signature non-violent philosophy is fully preserved: players have no weapons and must learn to coexist with the planet's creatures rather than eliminate them.

Co-op, a series first, supports up to four players with full crossplay between PC and Xbox, flexible save sharing, and shared progression so late joiners don't need to replay content. The early access period is expected to last between two and three years, with a planned roadmap including new biomes, creatures, tools, vehicles, and the next chapter of the story.

Even the tense lawsuit between the original founders of the San Francisco-based studio and South Korean publisher KRAFTON did not disrupt the game development or hype behind Subnautica 2. That said, it will be interesting to see how the court battle progresses now that the game's early access is live and so successful.
