The much-anticipated underwater survival exploration game Subnautica 2 finally launches today in early access on PC (Steam, Epic Games Store) and Game Preview (also available via Game Pass) on Xbox Series S and X, following an ongoing querelle between the founders of Unknown Worlds and KRAFTON that turned into an active lawsuit. After the court's decision to reinstate the former Unknown Worlds CEO, Ted Gill, the studio quickly communicated the early access launch date.

Ahead of the debut, awaited by over five million users on Steam alone, Wccftech was invited to a remote media presentation featuring lead game designer Anthony Galagos and creative media producer Scott McDonald, who showcased the developers' vision and roadmap for Subnautica 2.

Series Identity and Design Philosophy

Galagos opened the presentation by clarifying how Unknown Worlds thinks about the franchise internally. While Subnautica is commonly labeled a survival game, the team considers it primarily an exploration game, where survival mechanics serve and drive exploration rather than exist as an end in themselves. The series has always leaned into non-violence, after all, giving players tools for self-expression without pushing them toward combat, and deliberately avoids quest logs or explicit guidance in favor of self-directed play. The team compared their approach to FromSoftware's Elden Ring: despite playtest feedback requesting more hand-holding, they have maintained the philosophy of trusting players to find their own way.

Subnautica 2 was designed to deliver more of that core experience while feeling fresh. The key decision was to build an entirely new planet rather than return to planet 4546B from the original game or Below Zero. This new planet has a whole new ecology, a new story, new creatures, and several new gameplay systems. Galagos described the design target as roughly "a third new, a third the same, and a third improved."

The New World and Story

The game takes place on an alien planet that was previously the site of a failed human colony. Players wake up with no memory of how they arrived and must unravel what happened to the colonists who came before them. The sense of isolation central to the franchise is preserved by the fact that the colony is gone — "everybody's gone to the rapture," as Galagos put it — leaving the player largely alone in their investigation.

The player character is a silent protagonist, a deliberate choice after Below Zero received criticism for its voiced lead. The only consistent companion is Noah, an AI whose terminal the player must physically visit to interact with. Noah cannot speak to the players when they are out in the field, preserving the feeling of solitude during exploration.

The story of Subnautica 2 is designed to be fully self-contained and accessible to newcomers, with callbacks for franchise veterans but no prior knowledge required. An optional audio drama, Voices from Beyond, is available on the studio's YouTube channel for those who desire additional lore context leading into the game's events.

Subnautica 2's New and Improved Gameplay Systems

Adaptations and Biomods

A new biological progression system replaces traditional skills. Players gain permanent Adaptations by interacting with native plant life. For example, the players start the game unable to digest the planet's proteins and must acquire an adaptation to eat. Separately, Biomods are swappable abilities learned from creatures that allow players to lean into preferred playstyles, functioning loosely like class mechanics. Galagos was careful to distinguish these from Bioshock-style plasmids, describing them as minor secondary progression layers rather than the game's core loop. The game also moves away from the randomized resource spawning in the original Subnautica to a fully visible resource system, so players can see exactly what they are harvesting before interacting with it.

Vehicles: The Tadpole

The new primary submersible is called the Tadpole. It introduces a chassis system: players can attach different chassis that change handling and gameplay. The first chassis available is the Scout Ray Wings, which significantly increase speed and maneuverability. A cargo-focused chassis was also shown in the cinematic trailer. The team confirmed there will be a larger submarine later in the game with a customizable interior layout, echoing the Cyclops from the first Subnautica, but vehicle hull sizes will remain fixed to allow the team to design the world with predictable player reach in mind.

Base Building

The base building system has been completely overhauled in this new title. Where the original used bespoke attachable pieces, Subnautica 2 introduces a sculptural extrusion system inspired by how clay is manipulated in 3D modeling. Players start with a core shape and use a brush, adjustable in size, to push and pull the structure into different forms. This extends to internal walls, furniture like couches, windows, and moon pools of customizable size. The base building system took a small dedicated team over a year to build. Galagos noted that the approach was chosen specifically because it maintains structural integrity.

Non-Violent Defense

The franchise's non-violent philosophy continues in Subnautica 2. Players will not be given any weapons; Unknown Worlds' design intent is for them to learn to live alongside creatures rather than eliminate threats. Tools available for creature deterrence include a Resonator (a sound pulse device shown in an earlier gameplay trailer), as well as flares for distraction and a multi-tool that can be used to repel creatures physically. The team also confirmed that stealth options will be available for players who prefer avoidance.

Blight System

One of the new ecological systems is the Blight. When a planet is in ecological distress, blooms of infection spread through root systems and infect creatures, making them aggressive in a manner the team compared to zombies. Players will need to address these infestations throughout the game. Visual cues, such as muted colors, signal infected areas.

Leviathans

Five Leviathans are present at the Early Access launch. The most prominent is the Collector, described as the large, aggressive creature players will primarily want to avoid. A giant coral crab was also shown in the gameplay footage.

Subnautica 2's Online Co-Op Mode

Subnautica 2 supports optional four-player co-op, with players able to choose from four pre-designed characters; other options will be released during early access. However, the developers see it mostly as "a single-player game you can add people to". Co-op is never forced and must be actively enabled. The save system is flexible: players can convert solo saves to multiplayer, share saves between sessions, and the game will remember individual player inventories across host changes. Progression is shared among all players, so late joiners catch up automatically rather than having to replay content.

Crossplay is available between Xbox and PC, with full platform parity on patches across Steam, Epic, and Xbox simultaneously. The team addressed concerns about the loss of isolation in co-op by noting that there is no leash, so players can be in completely separate parts of the game world. Moreover, playtests found that co-op groups still experienced fear and tension comparable to those in solo play.

Future Roadmap

Unknown Worlds also outlined some of the planned improvements and additions that will be released during Subnautica 2's early access period.

Early Access 1.1 (Quality of Life Update)

Early Access 1.2 (Co-Op Update)

Do note that Unknown Worlds estimates the early access phase will last between 2 and 3 years.

Subnautica 2's Pricing and PC Specs

The game is priced at $29.99, and regional pricing is applied. Both Survival and Creative modes are available at launch. Galagos estimated the average play time for the current Early Access content at 14–20 hours, depending on play style. The game has approximately 10 biomes at launch.

Unlike the previous entries in the franchise, Subnautica 2 runs on Unreal Engine 5, leveraging Nanite for pixel density and Lumen for dynamic lighting. A Steam Deck-specific preset is included, targeting a locked 30 FPS on low settings with the option to trade visual quality for higher frame rates via TSR upscaling.
