Star Wars Jedi: Survivor PS5/XSX Performance Mode is Rough, 30fps Quality Mode the Best Bet

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor launches today, and unfortunately, it seems like it’s the latest in a crop of bad PC ports, with reports of poor performance leading to the game picking up a “Mostly Negative” user score on Steam. But we’re not here to talk about the PC right now – what about consoles? While the news is better on Xbox Series X/S and PS5, things are far from perfect, and in fact, if you want to get the best experience you’re going to want to make a somewhat unintuitive choice in the options menu.

So, if you want the best performance from a game, what visual mode do you choose? Performance, right? Well, that’s actually not the best choice with Star Wars Jedi: Survivor as there are consistent reports that the Performance mode is very uneven on PS5 and XSX, rarely if ever hitting its 60fps target and introducing additional pop-in and screen tearing. While there aren’t any full head-to-head console comparisons up yet, the following video from Fuzion Xbox Testing shows Survivor dropping into the mid-to-low 40s on the Xbox Series X (expect similar issues on the PS5). According to reports, the area shown in the video isn’t even the most challenging part of the game, as the semi-open planet of Koboh is the real stress test.

Again, somewhat counterintuitively, your best bet for performance is actually Quality mode. It’s only 30fps, but it seems to be a consistent 30fps, without any of the stuttering that sometimes comes along with lower-framerate modes. Additionally, various visual issues like screen tearing are also less prevalent.

Haven’t been keeping up with Star Wars Jedi: Survivor? Wccftech’s Kai Powell noted the game’s performance issues in his full review

“The biggest deterrent to getting the most out of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor remains the performance on PlayStation 5 and other platforms. Stuttering upon entering new areas or a general sluggishness to traverse the Koboh landscape are frequent even on PS5’s Performance Mode.”

…that said, overall he still found the game to be a worthwhile, if not exactly groundbreaking, Star Wars experience.

“Cal Kestis' latest journey, this time to seek out a long-lost Jedi stronghold on Tanalorr, should feel intimately familiar to fans of Jedi: Fallen Order. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor builds upon the successes of the original title but could do more to stand up on its own merits.”

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is available now on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PS5.
