Four characters from the game 'Star Fox' stand in front of a vivid orange backdrop with spaceships flying in the background.

Out of the blue, Nintendo shadowdropped a Star Fox Direct and revealed the previously rumored game.

It's a remake of the original 1997 Nintendo 64 title, which may be a little confusing for some, since there were already a remake and a reimagining of that classic game. Anyway, Nintendo describes it as a "cinematic take" with fully voiced dialogue, a sweeping orchestral soundtrack, all-new cutscenes, and redesigned characters with a more animal-like aesthetic. It will be released exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2 on June 25, 2026.

Among the game's additions is a prologue depicting a past mission involving James McCloud, Fox's father, that sets the stakes before the main campaign begins. Character banter between missions is fully preserved and expanded, with new mission briefing cutscenes between stages adding fresh lore and character development.

Players will find the following modes in the new Star Fox game:

There are also several Nintendo Switch 2-specific features, like Joy-Con 2 Mouse Controls, which allow the player to hold the controller like a mouse for intuitive aiming and steering in Campaign and Challenge modes. With Co-op split controls, one Joy-Con 2 can be shared between two players, splitting pilot and gunner duties. With GameShare, up to four players can play locally or online via GameChat, even if they don't own the game.

Character Avatars use AR facial tracking (mouth, blinks, and eyebrow movement) to appear as Fox, Falco, or other Star Fox characters during GameChat, visible to friends playing other games too. Lastly, Star Fox includes Nintendo 64 controller support for those who want the original feel.
