Despite not being the most powerful current-generation system, the Nintendo Switch 2 has clearly shown what it is capable of doing in games like Cyberpunk 2077, Star Wars Outlaws, and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, delivering solid experiences that don't feel gutted compared to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Later this year, Ubisoft will push the system further, delivering full ray tracing at 4K resolution output, 60 FPS in Rayman Legends Retold, matching the experience on the other consoles in several ways, according to Ubisoft Montpellier's technical advisor Fabien Delpiano.
“As you might know, ray tracing is quite costly,” Delpiano said in a new interview with VGC, “In Outlaws on Switch 2, they deal with it by running at 30 FPS, but we are aiming for 60 on all platforms, from the most humble – Switch 2 – to the most high end, a PS5 Pro, or high end PC – so it was quite a challenge… we had to really push the limit of Snowdrop from 30fps to 60.”
“One of the tricks we used to reach that quality is to lower the resolution,” Delpiano explained. “For most of the GPU resources it depends on the resolution, so the more we reduce resolution, the less costly it will be.” However, with NVIDIA DLSS support, the Nintendo Switch 2 version of Rayman Legends Retold will output at 4K resolution in docked mode, where power consumption is not an issue, and at 1080p in handheld mode. “Essentially, on Switch 2, we are quite on par with the Xbox Series S [version in terms of] quality,” Delpiano said.
However, Rayman Legends Retold will match the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X in other areas, such as the amount of details. “We develop a thing where the level of detail is not based on distance [from parts of the environment] but it’s based on ratio and scale, so depending on the size of the character on screen it will change the level of detail accordingly to that… the amount of details that we have on PS5 is approximately the same as on Switch 2.” This will be the same in multiplayer, as the Nintendo Switch 2 will retain the same level of detail while running the game at 60 FPS.
With the Nintendo Switch 2 set to deliver a great experience with Rayman Legends Retold, the return of the series is set to be remarkable, with some additional content set to make one of the best entries in the series, as detailed by David Carcasole in our hands-on preview.
