Shadow of the Tomb Raider Teased for Possible Gamescom Reveal

Aug 20, 2017 at 06:09am EDT

Shadow of the Tomb Raider might be very close to being revealed by Square Enix. You might remember that the game was a no-show at E3 2017, just like we had anticipated.

At that time, franchise Senior Community Manager Meagan Marie said that fans would be able to catch up with Lara's new adventure "later" in 2017. Well, Gamescom 2017 always sounded like a safe bet and now a reveal next week seems even more likely, with the official franchise Instagram account posting a screenshot from Rise of the Tomb Raider and noting how Lara is looking at "what's to come".

Not much is known about the game, which was first leaked in November 2016 when a random fan snapped a picture of a presentation for Shadow of the Tomb Raider from a developer who was on his same metro.

This happened in Montreal, which gives us more confidence in saying that development is primarily being handled by Eidos Montreal rather than Crystal Dynamics, now busy with the Avengers project.

A couple months ago, another leak happened via marketing studio Takeoff Creative. This provided us some assets including a potential logo of Shadow of the Tomb Raider as well as Lara handling new weapons such as a machete, a sword and a spear. It also showcased Lara next to Aztec pyramids, suggesting that at least part of the game could be set in Mexico.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider will likely release for all major platforms at once, unlike the previous installment which became controversial for a temporary Xbox exclusivity agreement between Square Enix and Microsoft. Considering that Rise of the Tomb Raider first released in November 2015, a release in the first half of 2018 is a strong possibility.

We'll keep you updated on any further rumors and official news, so stay tuned.
