Samsung & SK Hynix have announced a multi-billion-dollar expansion plan for AI and chip manufacturing in Korea.

Korea's Largest Tech Firms, Samsung & SK Hynix, Pour In Over 1.3 Trillion Won For Major Expansion Plans

In a bid to aggressively compete with rivals such as TSMC and Intel, Korea's major semiconductor firms, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, have pledged 1,350 Trillion Won towards the expansion of semiconductor manufacturing, AI Data Centers, and memory production.

The expansion plan will span 10 years and will cost roughly 1350 Trillion Won or $870 billion. It's not just semiconductor manufacturing; the plan also involves the development of brand-new AI data centers, battery and display manufacturing plants, and EUV, etching, photomask, CMP, and deposition equipment for semiconductors.

The South Korean government spearheaded the largest semiconductor investment in history by Samsung and SK Hynix, aiming to double memory production capacity within five years and massively expand DRAM and NAND Flash memory factories, sending shockwaves through the global memory market. Faced with the influx of South Korean manufacturers, Taiwanese memory manufacturers have raised their alert levels to the highest level.

SK Hynix plans to put in 400 Trillion Won towards the Cheongju production facility while 100 Trillion Won will be procured by the Southwest Region that will consist of a brand new production cluster.

During the 10-year roadmap, both Samsung and SK Hynix plan to build 4-5 state-of-the-art chip fabrication facilities in South and North Chungcheong regions. The Chungcheong region itself is also going to contribute around 100 trillion won towards the semiconductor manufacturing hub, says The Elec.

The expansion will also be a continued effort towards boosting memory production, which is facing severe shortages. DRAM production is already set to double within five years, & the Korean government has laid out the plans to accelerate the construction of these semiconductor hubs by 12 years.

According to the previous schedules, the fabs were supposed to come online by a 2040+ timeframe, and now aim for a 2033 timeframe which is a substantial difference and shows just how much aggressive Korean semiconductor firms are to tackle ongoing challenges such as rising AI compute demand for accelerators, DRAM and NAND.

Samsung and SK Hynix’s record-breaking expansion plan marks a turning point for Korea’s semiconductor industry, signaling its intent to dominate the global chip and AI landscape.

By committing over 1,350 trillion won to new fabs, AI data centers, and advanced memory production, and accelerating timelines by nearly a decade, Korea is not only addressing critical DRAM and NAND shortages but also positioning itself as a formidable rival to TSMC and Intel. This bold, government-backed initiative demonstrates the nation’s resolve to secure leadership in next-generation computing and reshape the future of the global memory market.
